Aknowledging the Haiti crisis was a good thing we did in our Jan. issue, but its weird that we have no story to go along with the picture. The picture is interesting, but i think we should have captured a more power/intense moment of the after effects of haiti… maybe of kids crying, bleeding people, or broken homes.. not that im trying to be morbid or anything. I just think that a more intense picture would have impacted the students more. or at least more than the helicopter.
The front page is suppose to be the page with the most important news, yet we have an article about juice carton wallets and the house burning of a husky alumn whom more than 1/2 the school doesn’t know of. well, i guess its still a worthy story to be put on the front page, because they did lose everything in there house. but common’ juice cartons?!

Jan. 26, 2009: Features

The features section did a spread on ASB and what they really do in and for our school. yet after reading through it all, i dont feel like i actually know what they do. Well, since im in ASB, my opinion may be somewhat bais, because i know first hand about all the non-sense exploited student labor we go through for the sake of our school. For example, though our officers run various events during the school year, such as spirit week, dances, fundraisers, etc. they are part of our leadership class, and the class as a whole is what really impacts washington. Leadership WEEDS like no other, and is the key force behind the motivation and spirit of the school.
This week is multi-cultural week and in order to embrace the diversity of the school, leadership has organized unique days such as “Dress in your ethnic apparel” day (awarding students who dressed with free tickets to the international kitchen on friday), the multi-cultural assembly thursday, and international kitchen friday. Without little events like these, no matter how stupid some may seem, our school would be boring, and just like every other school in fremont.
Also, ASB keeps a record of the number of ASB cards sold, so we wouldn’t need to survey a group of people to find out. Even then, IDK shouldn’t have been an option.
Labeling a section of the check graph as OFFICERS seems misleading. The money looks like its being spent ON the officers FOR the officers, when in reality its being spent BY the officers FOR their class.

Anecdote

A few things i’ve learned this semester include figuring out indesign, photoshop, laying out pages, editing in a “journalistic” way with: no cheerleading, no passive voice, and using weird journalism style rules (ninth and 11th, varsity and JV, pikas instead of inches). I enjoy being a section editor becuase although its a drag having to always chase after reporters to making sure they’re working on an article or stress over whether they turn it in time for distribution day, i enjoy the “feel” of the class… its just really sress relieving and chill to be in journalism at the end of the day. i feel like my problems in school with physics and stats are over with, and journalism is where i can just be…not as contantly stressed about life. haha i dont know if any of that makes sense.

Anyways, i hope to further gain insight and know all the journalism rules and styles by heart before i graduate…not necessarily by memorizing them little by little every day persay, but more of just learning as i go along every day as i edit an article. Oh, and another goal i have before i graduate is to create a KICK ASS layout on the sports section.. something crazy and unique.. maybe a giant infographic at the very end of the year of ALL the MVPS from the year (since winter MVPs wont be in the print edition)…. like have a giant image of one athlete, with the MVPs making up the body… for example, the cross country and track mvps could make up the legs, the gymnasts and swimmers make up the core, the waterpolo player the head, etc… just a GIANT HUSKY athlete. haha, it might turn out weird, but im sure brian can think of something cool along the lines of that with his artsie skills.

This infographic obviously has a negative connotation, giving examples of highly paid executives basically robbing their firm of money once they leave (hehe im feelin pretty good about going into the business field in college).

I just thought this infographic was really creative and cute. You dont normally see such a long and yet simple image. We could relate this using the quarter system at school, and inform the student body about how many students fail a class. Ms. Dewitt said that 60% Of washington high school students have failed a math class…. this seems a bit far fetched, but who knows, maybe she’s right… OH! and on the bottom, we could have a trampoline and show how many of those 60% failures bounced back after summer school!! …yeah!
